Backgammon resign button

Backgammon is set up wrong if a player resigns.   It should award 2 points (gammon) if a player resigns without getting a man off, and 3 points (backgammon)if the player resigns and still has a man on the bar or in the 1st 6 spaces where a player first enters the board.   Currently on GamingPeak, it only awards 1 point if a player resigns, which is incorrect.

We've gone back and forth on this, because there are conflicting reports of which way resign should work. We elected to make it work this way for the time being, until a broader consensus is reached. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Speed,

We checked the multiple sources for rules on this, and they do make sense in that we're doing it right.

For example - if you and I start a game and are playing and you, out of the chute (your first 2 rolls....) roll double 4's,  then offer me the cube and I don't accept it, you get 1 point - NOT 3 for a backgammon (nor 2 for a gammon).

As well, I have played "real" live tournaments (real people, real cards, in the non-virtual world) and this was how it was played.

We would be interested in seeing your position stated in an official capacity for "standard" backgammon.

Please cite your sources for the protocol you stated above.

--These sites are intended for entertainment only. Most people who visit them just want to make friends and play games such as I do.  If you are looking for serious play, there are other sites that you can win monies etc. Otherwise, if you are just looking to play and enjoy the game, don't worry about scores or points. I certainly don't because that is not why I play.

I think you are confusing declining a double with resigning.   In your example Sundancer, you are absolutely right that you only award 1 point (or technically whatever the value of the doubling cube is before the offer) whenever you reject a double offer from your opponent.   The position on the board does not matter in this case.   GamingPeak currently does this correctly.   It is only when a player resigns that GP is doing it incorrectly.   If you think about this logically, you will see that is true.   Right now if you play against me, it is impossible to ever gammon or backgammon me.   To use an extreme example, I could have 4 men on my bar still and you could only have 1 man left to bear off on my 1 point, and all I need to do is resign when it is time for my roll and you would only earn 1 point.   Obviously, this is not correct.

If you decide to fix this Shutter, my suggestion is when a player goes to resign, a message comes up that says something like "If you resign now, your opponent will be awarded X amount of points, do you really want to resign?   Reply yes or cancel".   That way any player that doesn't know the rule isn't surprised when they resign.   This is currently how I see other backgammon sites handle this situation.

Great post Speed.  Thanks for the clarification, example, and suggested fix idea. :)

Frankly, I play not for points, but just to play for the fun. I know many people have varying degrees of interest in Backgammon. Some for money, others for points, but as I've been playing this game on a real board for over thirty years, when I started, it was never about points. It has always been about playing for fun. Win or lose a game, start another. Now, its become a game riddled with rules such as "Jacoby and Crawford Rules" and points which never were the original way this game was played thousands of years ago. It would be nice if this game was actually preserved to some degree to its original aspect instead of trying to update  it until the old saying "Keep it simple" is forgotten.

As for people who resign from games on a regular basis, they shouldn't be playing to begin with. They have this notion that if they are not winning, they might as well quit. This is not good sportsmanship, and these people dont add any positive aspects to this game or community. They irritate players more than leave them satisfied with their newly awarded points by default.

I say if they are regular "resigners", put them on some time out and tell them they are expected to play and not abandon games at their own choosings.
